2024 GOALS

  • We seek to identify the root causes of low breeding success and high mortality among Minnesota loons.
  • This will require a deeper dive in Minnesota and a more intensive field effort.
  • Our goal is to raise $40,000 to support the 2024 field work in Minnesota.
  • We are currently about half way there.

Thank you for your interest in supporting loon research! I conduct this work in my capacity as a Professor of Biology at Chapman University in Orange, California. All funds raised here will directly support my work on the conservation and ecology of common loons in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Specifically, your donations will support our research team as we measure population dynamics, investigate causes of breeding failure and adult mortality, and explore ways in which we can reverse loon population decline in the Upper Midwest.

A donation to the Loon Project provides substantial bang for the buck. No funds we receive go to overhead or salary for me or other senior personnel. Instead, they support small stipends for our field staff; costs of lodging and travel; equipment such as canoes and binoculars; colored leg bands that we use to mark and track individuals; and maintenance of our canoes and small motorboats.

In addition:

  • Your donation to the Loon Research Fund is entirely tax deductible.
  • Chapman University is a 501c(3) organization.
  • Chapman’s Employer Identification Number (EIN) is 95-1643992.
  • All donors receive a tax receipt from the Office of Advancement.

Two Ways to Donate

If you would like to send us a check, make it out to “Chapman University” but please also write “The Loon Project” on the memo line so that it will go to our project specifically. If you wish to support our loon research only in one state, you may specify “LP – Wisconsin” or “LP-Minnesota”.

Send the check to:
